Rolling Coils Assignment
WHAT IS IT:
Coil building is a hand-building technique that is great for making pots and sculptures. Clay "ropes" or "snakes" are made and pushed together once the "ropes" have been scored (marks with a fork or wooden stick) and slip added (glue like water/clay mix). An artist might leave the coil appearance or smooth it out entirely.
HOW TO:

National Standard 2: Using knowledge of structures and functions.
State Standard 2: Making - Students will assemble and create works of art, manipulate art media, and organize images with the elements and principles of art.
REQUIREMENTS:
Create a coil bowl inspired by the work of Gustav Klimt. (See various artworks below as discussed in class.) It could be some of the patterns he used in his paintings, or maybe the colors he worked with.

1.On a piece of paper write 3 elements from Klimt's works that you want to incorporate into your bowl. BE SPECIFIC!!!

2. Show the 3 elements you have chosen to Mrs. Mallory. (You must do this in order to get a grade for this assignment.)
3. Build a coil bowl/pot using at least the 3 elements you chose.
4. Minimum 6" in one direction.
5. Must be well constructed and withstand the firing process
6. Must use coils only. (The base can be a slab. The base does not have to be made of coils.)
